What was once a loose game of estimating theoretical losses to balance pipeline receipts with deliveries has evolved into a precise and granular practice acting as a cog in daily gas operations for every gas company in North America; production, transportation and distribution.

The upcoming hurricane season is expected to produce an above average number of storms, meteorologist Jeff Johnson said during Telvent DTN’s 2010 Hurricane Outlook held on May 20, due to warmer than average water temperatures in the Caribbean Sea and southern Atlantic Ocean. Less wind shear is also considered a factor.

The long-awaited climate change bill released on May 12 by Sens. John Kerry, D-Mass., and Joe Lieberman, I-Conn, has elicited both criticism and praise from members of the oil industry.

The legislation, titled The American Power Act, seeks to reduce carbon pollution by 17 percent in 2020 and by more than 80 percent by 2050 by applying a multi-pronged approach to greenhouse gas control and energy generation.

BP said it continues to work with the U.S. Coast Guard and other federal agencies and contractors to safely and effectively stop the flow of oil in the Gulf of Mexico from the Mississippi Canyon 252, which has come ashore in parts of Louisiana, and reportedly killed some birds, sea turtles and crabs.

Oil is reportedly leaking from the well at a rate of 5,000 bpd, though some estimates have that number at 25,000 bpd. The spill was caused by the sinking of Transocean's Deepwater Horizon drilling rig on April 22 following an explosion and fire two days prior. The incident left three of the 126 crewmembers critically injured and the 11 missing but presumed dead. BP has a 65 percent interest in MC252.
