The 4th Annual Urban Mobility Conference and Expo (UMI 2011), organized by the Urban Institute of Transport and promoted by India’s Ministry of Urban Development, has awarded MCGM with the Best Smart Transportation System Project Prize in recognition of Mumbai´s new traffic control project, an undertaking in which the company has been involved in project development. Defined as a forum of encounter and debate on sustainable transportation-related options, measures and technologies, the conference awards a total of ten prizes to acknowledge good practices in urban transportation projects, including the Best Mass Transit Project and Best Integrated Multimodal Transportation System awards.

On Tuesday, the U.S. House of Representatives Transportation and Infrastructure Committee formally released H.R. 7, the American Energy and Infrastructure Jobs Act. It is a five-year, $260 billion package that consolidates various programs, boosts TIFIA funding to $1 billion per year, and heavily modifies state funding distribution formulas. The role of the traffic management center (TMC) is changing.  For many years, we used TMCs to facilitate surveillance and traffic incident management.  More recently, advanced software and better surveillance data have allowed the TMC to automate certain functions, supporting the operator by providing pre-determined response plans for commonly occurring situations.  However, the future of TMCs includes the ability to optimize the management of the transportation network.

The Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) today released State Transportation Facts and Figures, an interactive web transportation mapping application that allows customers to find state-by-state transportation data, comparisons and rankings as well as gives them the ability to download state transportation information.
