The company has been awarded with a new contract to implement its Telvent SmartMobilityTM Road Suite solution on the extension of the Roads in Arriyadh Old Airport

November 21, 2011 – Telvent GIT, S.A., a leading real-time IT solutions and information provider for a sustainable world, announced today that the company has been awarded a contract by Almabani General Contractors, who has been present on the Saudi construction market for more than 35 years. Almabani´s name is linked to many of the most known constructed transportation and public infrastructure projects nationwide, to implement the Telvent SmartMobilityTM Road Suite solution on the extension of the Roads in Arriyadh Old Airport area. The project, lead by the High Commission for the Development of Arriyadh, will allow extending the existing north-south and east-west highways in more than 11 kms and the construction of three tunnels.

The high increase of number of daily trips in Al Riyadh, which have reached up to 6 million per day, added to the unprecedented levels of rain fall in recent years, has highlighted the need of improving and developing the Riyadh transportation infrastructure. Therefore the High Commission for the Development of Arriyadh decided to apply a comprehensive and integrated plan to develop the transport system in the city, a strategy that looks 20 years ahead.

The Arriyadh Old Airport Roads extensions will renew and extend the existing north-south and east-west highways that link with the city, will allow providing great benefits on travel times reductions to the Arriyadh citizens, while at the same time reinforce driver safety.

Telvent will install its solution Telvent SmartMobilityTM Road Suite, based on the company’s control and data acquisition system (OASyS SCADA), which will allow centralization of both tunnel infrastructure and traffic management providing operators with a set of effective tools to facilitate the process, while heightening safety and security at the same time. Specifically, the following systems will be implemented and integrated: fire detection control, closed-circuit television (CCTV) surveillance, automatic incident detection, traffic data collection station, variable message panels, lighting, ventilation, communications network, etc.

The solution will enable traffic operators to control traffic in real time and be prepared to respond quickly and effectively to any emergency situation occurring within the infrastructure. This will lead to a substantial improvement in incident response times and more efficient management of maintenance plans, which, in turn, will lead to a decrease in accidents rates and an increase in users' safety.

According to Telvent’s chairman and CEO, Ignacio Gonzalez, “The Middle East market is very important for Telvent. This new award highlights our active involvement in the Middle East traffic sector and helps Almabani and the High Commission for the Development of Arriyadh towards reaching the commitment of improving safety and optimizing urban mobility in the interests of creating a safer and more pleasant environment for citizens, thereby improving their quality of life”.

In recent years, the company has been awarded in Saudi Arabia several transportation management projects for over 50 million euros which have pointed the company as one of the major players in the ITS sector not only in the country but in the middle east region, where for example the company did recently finalized successfully the Beirut city´s urban traffic management system. The company is right now developing the urban traffic management system for Jeddah, Makkah and Madinah as well as the King Abdullah Road Traffic management system in Arriyadh.
